Mastering the long bunker shot is not easy.  But in this video, Mel Sole gives an obvious and concise description of what to do to make this shot as simple as possible.  Your short game will love you for this!

Set Up.

My setup is the same as a 50-yard pitch shot, with one exception. I will move the ball back in my stance by a couple of inches.  I set all of my weight on the front foot and swing my arm back to 9 o clock (my backswing for a 50-yard shot)

The Technique.

My technique for a pitch from the fairway and my pitch from the fairway bunker are the same. I control the shot with the body rotation and not the arms.  I allow the distance to happen automatically based on my backswing length!

When I play the shot, my focus is to keep the shot at the same pace back and through. No hurry. That is the ruination of most short game sots.  It's what I call a lack of trust.  You build trust by hitting the ball a consistent distance from a certain backswing length every time!
