Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

To continue our junior golf theme, I focus on making the instruction fun so the juniors will want to return to the golf course. We want them to view golf as entertainment and as a way of forming new friendships!

Juniors who are young and play golf for fun.

I recently gave a putting lesson on the putting green, and a grandfather and grandson walked onto the putting green.  Looked like grandpa’s first time with the young lad.  He tossed three balls on the putting green and gave him a junior putter.  The boy grabbed it like a hockey stick and whacked the first ball off the putting green.

No, No, said the grandfather.  He took the lad, placed his hands close together on the putter, and said, “Hold it like this. Stand like this,” putting his feet close together.  Now go ahead.  The boy did the same, Took his hockey stance and grip, and whacked a ball.  Again the no, no from the grandfather.

As he tried to help the boy once more, the boy took the putter, threw it on the ground, and said, “I don’t want to do this anymore!” “Let’s go home!”  I walked over to the grandfather, who looked devastated and said, “Give him the putter and tell him to hit towards that hole and see how many strokes he can take to get it into the hole”  It does not matter how many, just let him try. Once he has done that, go to another hole and see if he can beat the first total.

As he gets older, you can get him to do the correct form, but for now, all that matters is to get him to want to come back tomorrow.  That’s the most important thing.  The more he comes, the better he will get.  Kids figure things out pretty quickly.

Juniors who are slightly older and play competitive golf.

Once juniors start playing competitive golf, they will want to practice and learn from a competent instructor.  The instruction should still be geared towards fun but in a more structured sense.  The child must be taught form while thinking he’s having a good time.  Playing golf with other kids of the same age will bring out the competitive spirit, and he will ask when he is ready for more formal instruction.
