Jason Day overcame poor ball striking with a hot putter to win the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC.  After bogeying 13 and 14 and losing his two-shot lead, Jason birdied 2 of the last 3 to clinch a two-shot victory over Aaron Wise.  Wise shot a steady 3 under par 68 to finish tied for second.  Nick Watney holed a 30 footer on 18 to rob Wise of solo second.

Phil Mickelson had a top 5 finish which bodes well for the Players Championship.  Tiger Woods battled a balky putter to finish with a birdie-free 74 in the final round.  He finished in the top 15 in both Strokes Gained off the tee and Strokes Gained Approach.  Next week should be interesting, as Tiger knows those greens very well.

European Tour.

Paul Dunne and Gavin Moynihan of Ireland won the 2018 GolfSixes.  They had a 2-0 victory over France in the final after putting on a brilliant display on day two at Centurion Club in St Albans.

Ireland scored a birdie or better on 12 of the 17 holes they played on Sunday.  Dunn & Moynihan beat England Women, South Korea and the French after finishing top of Group C on Saturday.

The only match Ireland lost all week was to Mike-Lorenzo Vera and Romain Wattel and while the French duo made two birdies of their own in the final, they simply could not keep pace with the Irish pair.

While I personally am not that fond of this format, it seemed well received for the second year in a row.

LPGA Tour.

Sung Hyun Park of South Korea chipped in on the final hole to win the Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic at The Colony in Texas over Lindy Duncan of the USA.  She had a hot putter on the weekend with 24 and 28 putts in the final two rounds.  The tournament was plagued with poor weather all week.  It had to be shortened to 36 holes to have a Sunday finish.

PGA Tour Champions.

Bernhard Langer won the Insperity Invitational for the fourth time.  Langer started the round with a two-stroke lead, but by the 8th hole was 4 shots back of Paul Goydos.  Langer finished strong on the back 9. And after a wayward tee shot on 18, managed to play a great recovery from the trees to just right of the green and with a chip and a putt, won by one over Goydos, Jeff Maggert and Bart Bryant. My fellow South African, David Frost had a great final round of 67 to finish tied 5th.

This is Langer’s 37th win on the PGA Tour Champions.  This puts him in 2nd place all time.  He has a long way to go to catch the 85 wins by Hale Irwin.
