Most higher handicap golfers do not seem to have the ability to hit a really low golf shot. When they end up in the trees and require a low shot, they hit the ball too high and get caught up in the branches. Like every other shot in golf, it does take some practice. However, once you have the correct technique, it is an enjoyable shot to practice.
The Method!
Take a fairly low lofted club like a 4 or 5 iron. Play the ball in the middle of your stance. Don't play the ball too far back as this delofts the club, and you will end up hitting the shot too low and not get any distance. Have a forward shaft lean with the butt of the club level with your lead thigh. This is important! After that, play a normal shot making sure you trust the club to do the work. Finish the swing and extend your arms in front of you to get the feeling of driving the ball forward!
This shot, along with hitting high shots (next week's tip), draw shots and fades, makes your practice session fun. If you have a clear idea of how to hit these shots, you will be more willing to try them out on the course. Practice with a friend and see who can hit the lowest, highest, or biggest slice or hook! Enjoy yourself!
