One of the most important aspects of gaining distance in the golf swing is body rotation.  Every sport that requires power has a weight shift and a body rotation.  Think baseball pitcher, javelin thrower, Tennis player and Quarterback in football.  All of these players need a good body rotation to create power in their respective sports.  Golf is no different, so here is a Great drill for measuring body rotation in the golf swing.

The Method.

Take an alignment stick and thread it through your two front belt loops.  Make sure that the alignment stick protrudes all the way to your front hip and nothing is protruding through the trail hip.  You do not want to catch your trail arm on the stick on the downswing!

Set up your golf bag directly behind you and level with your lead heel. You can also use another alignment stick stuck in the ground vertically.  I have long legs, so I tended to miss an alignment stick behind me so I went with the golf bag.

Do some practice swings first and try to let the stick hit the golf bag before the clubhead reaches the impact position.  Now for most people, including myself, this is impossible, but just making the effort will automatically start to increase the hip rotation.  This also gives you a great visual, and if you can see the stick moving behind you, you will know you are doing this correctly.  Don’t be impatient.  To increase the body rotation in the golf swing takes time and effort. This is a drill I think will get you there!
