Great Drill to Start the Spring Season!

Hi, I'm Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993. We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

This month's Golf Tip is a request from Barry McIntosh from Baltimore, OH. Barry asks, Mel, can you give me one drill I can do to kick start my golf game as soon as the courses open in the Spring?

Of Course, I can, Barry.

I call this the nine o clock to 3 o clock drill.

You can do it with any club in your bag, including your driver.

Take your normal stance, and keeping the lead arm straight, swing the club back until your lead arm is parallel to the ground (the nine o cock position). Then swing through, transferring your weight to your front foot, keeping your lead arm straight and finish with your belt buckle facing through to the target and your arms extended out in front of you (the three o clock position.)

Remember, do this drill slowly. If you are using an 8 or 9 iron, the ball should not go more than 50 yards in the beginning. Once you are making solid contact and you are getting a consistent hit, you can lengthen the backswing and move into a full swing, all the while concentrating on a reasonable extension with both arms through impact.

Not only will this improve your ball striking and your accuracy, but when you use your lob wedge or sand wedge, it will improve your pitching as well.

Try it and have a great golfing season, Barry!

Thanks for watching Great Drill to Start the Spring Season!
