Monthly Golf Tip by the Mel Sole Golf School.

This month's tip request comes from Chuck Stone of Wilmington, NC, who asks, "As a father, I would like some tips for playing with a junior. Do's and don'ts would be a good start."

Rule #1.

First of all, make sure that the child really wants to play, and it's not just a case of the parent taking the child to the course so that he/she can get some golfing in. The child must have the desire to play and look forward to the event.

The Pace of Play.

When playing golf with juniors, try not to over-instruct on the course. Leave that to the professional. Good course etiquette, fundamental rules, and speed of play are important aspects to focus on at an early age. Consideration for other people on the course and the correct pace of play allows everyone to enjoy their golf.

Good Behavior.

Good behavior is a must. Temper tantrums or sulking should never be tolerated. It is better to remove the child completely from the course and sit down with them at home to explain that that behavior is not acceptable. Make them understand that if this happens in the future, they will again be taken home. This might sound harsh, but a sulky child is a pain to play with, and a child who enjoys golf and does not worry about bad shots is a pleasure to be around.

Young golfers need to have as much fun as possible. Give them plenty of shots, and if they are beginners, don't make the score an issue.  Allow them to tee the ball up on the fairway to hit more good shots. Sometimes, please pick up the ball, move on to the green, and let them put out to complete the hole. (This will also help speed up play)

If the child is a reasonably accomplished golfer, then choose stroke play most of the time.

Occasionally throw in a few match play rounds, so they get used to competing against an individual as well as the field. The rules are slightly different in stroke play and match play, making sure the child knows the differences.

Playing golf with your children can be a great source of joy, and I wish you many enjoyable rounds for years to come.

If you have any further questions about your child, please email me at melsolegolf@gmail.com or call me at 800-624-4653.  Please remember that kids under 16 years are free in a 3-day school if accompanied by adults, 2 adults, and 2 free kids!
