Monthly Golf Tips by Mel Sole Golf School.

Back in 2011, Steve Stricker won the John Deere Classic for the third time.  His win that year was by far the most dramatic. Twice, Stricker buried shots deep in bunkers, one so far under the sand he had a hard time just finding the ball. However, Stricker's win could have been a little easier if he had not made this key mistake getting out of the sand on the final hole. Do you know what I'm referring to? To learn how to avoid making this mistake yourself, watch my video golf tip about playing the plugged lie shot when the ball is up near the edge of the bunker.

The Situation.

The ball is buried and also close to the lip of the bunker.  A hopeless situation?  Not at all!  This ball will come out 100% of the time if you know how to play it.

The Technique.

First of all, hood the clubface!  Completely!  You want the toe of the club to strike the sand first.  The secret to this shot is grip pressure.  It must be even looser than normal.  You want the club to twist in your hands.  The weight is on your back foot—one of the few times in golf where the weight is back there.  Go ahead, a swing hitting about 2" behind the ball.  As a result, the club will dig, twist, and the ball will come sailing out.  Because the ball is going up almost vertically, you have to swing hard!  Another shot game shot to add to your arsenal from the Mel Sole Golf School!
