In this month's golf tip, I talk about aiming the line on the golf ball. There are some optical illusions at play, and if you don't know this, it can have quite an effect on your putting. Check this out!
Why do you need a line on your ball?
Our eyes have what we call "binocular vision." That means we aim with two eyes looking at the ball face on. Because golf is a sideways-on sport, we get an optical illusion when aiming the putter face.
Why does the line sometimes look wrong?
Because you have been playing golf for all the years, your eyes have been lying to you. It's a perception vs. reality scenario. When you have a few practice swings, walk into the ball and aim your putter face, matching the line on the ball to the line on your putter, take one last look at the hole, and then your eyes come back to the ball....... and the line looks crooked. We have all experienced that scenario.
Trust your eyes.
The line looks crooked because our eyes are lying to us! So this is how you overcome that misconception. Go through your normal routine, do your practice swings, walk into the ball, aim your putter face matching the line on the ball to the line on the putter, and then DON'T LOOK BACK AT THE HOLE AGAIN! Trust your eyes that they have got it right, and go ahead and make your stroke.
By using this alignment method, your putting will become a lot stronger! Trust is such a huge part of this game! Enjoy!
