Glenn Frey, Gifted Golf Promoter and, oh, musician in a band!

We all know the legacy of music that Glenn Frey left us as singer, composer and guitarist with the famous Eagles band.  And we've often seen the golf-loving Frey on TV playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and other celebrity fundraisers. But who knew that his passion for kids golf would lead him to interrupt guys, like Tiger Woods, practicing at tournaments, and make propositions to them?  Frey would basically say.."Come play in my fundraising tournament and I will play for free at any of your events".  And they did . . .

Arsenal soccer player breaks Guinness World Golf Record!

When I saw this, my reaction was "Come on, anybody can do that!"  But apparently not.  Aaron Ramsey, who plays for Arsenal, broke the record on a game show hosted by James Corden (of The Late Late Show fame on CBS) who just so happened to have a golf club and bucket of balls on hand to allow Aaron an attempt on this dubious world record.  Thanks to

Think Greg Norman’s stint was short? Hear Johnny’s Story!

As I have mentioned in previous posts, Johnny Miller is my favorite golf announcer.  I don't think anybody works as hard at his job than he does, and his recall of stats and funny anecdotes keep us entertained even when the golf is boring.  But in reading this story, by  of Golf Digest, it sounds like . . .

Nick Faldo is the New King of the Golf Booth! Sorry Johnny!

I have never been a great fan of Nick Faldo as a broadcaster.  So it came as quite a surprise when he beat out Johnny Miller as the most popular broadcaster in golf.  I have always liked Johnny's honesty and tremendous knowledge of the game.  Nick seems a little "smarmy" for my liking.  But, we live in a democratic society, so I defer to the winner.

It came as no surprise to me that Greg Norman was ousted by Fox.  His duty during the US Open was disastrous to say the least.  He . . .

Obviously Hollywood does not love golf. Not one nomination!

There have been some good and bad golf movies, and the most popular films like Caddyshack and Happy Gilmore are too light to be considered Academy Award material.  But if you have seen "Greatest Game ever Played", you must admit, the quality of the acting, cinematography and script rivalled other sports movies that have won Academy Awards.  Another golf film, the 2013 documentary called "The Short Game" should at least have been nominated!   Come on Hollywood, get with the game!

What would you choose? Olympic Golf or Major Championship?

For the first time in a very long time, Olympic Golf becomes a reality.  But not all the players are thrilled as I thought they would be.  Most have even opted out of the Pre Olympic trial run in Rio, deciding that the regular tour was more important.  I think the fact that is is a HUGE honor to represent your country will only hit them as they walk into the Olympic Stadium during the opening Ceremony.  Then there will be a huge "WOW, I glad I'm here!"  The Major Championships are important, don't get me . . .

Playing solo and posting scores is OK, if you move to Canada!

Every organization on the planet makes mistakes.  That is just life.  However, the smart ones, the successful ones, will admit they made a mistake, correct it and move on.  Not so with the USGA.  They definitely made a mistake saying that handicaps could no longer be posted if the golfer plays alone.  The Canadian Golf Association has already stated that they are not good with this ruling and will allow all golfers under their jurisdiction to still post scores while playing solo!  Well done eh!  Thanks must . . .

Farewell Christy O’Connor Jr. You were well loved!

I join legions of golfers who mourn the loss of legendary European Tour player Christy O'Connor Jr.  O'Connor's wins include the 1975 Irish Open plus three other European Tour events. He won the Senior British Open in 1999 and 2000.  He played the Ryder Cup twice and is renown for his 2-iron shot into The Belfry's 18th green at the 1989 Ryder Cup. It set up the win for Europe to retain the cup.  But Christy O'Connor will be remembered most for his kind and gentle soul.
