If it’s breezy, swing easy! A tip for playing in the wind!

If you want to really learn how to play in the wind, live on the coast!  I was the Head professional at Humewood Golf Club in Port Elizabeth, South Africa from 1977 to 1982.  The course is right on the ocean and you have to hit the ball low to keep it in play. In those 5 years I learned to hit my driver no higher than 20 feet off the ground, and those little punch shots into the green became a staple in my arsenal of shots . . .

Use the “Go get it” drill to understand correct body rotation!

Almost all high handicappers have one thing in common.  They have a lack of body rotation through the ball which automatically results in a poor extension though impact.  There is a direct correlation between the dreaded "chicken wing" and a poor body turn.  To understand the feeling of that important turn  Mike Perpich shows a simple way to get your body in the correct position.  Thanks to GOLF.com for sharing this video!

Correct Sine Angle.

You need to do 3 things to get rid of that pesky slice!

Slicing is the most common of errant shots by high handicap golfers.  The 3 main culprits in a slice:  1. The Grip, 2. Alignment and 3. An over the top swing.

Here Rickard Strongert shows you how to correct these.  Thanks to Videojug for this instructional video!

I learned the tough lesson of pitching out to the fairway the first time I played in Scotland.  My caddie that kept insisting I pitch out.  The lie was not conducive to moving the ball forward.  After several failed attempts I saw the wisdom in . . .

downswing lag

How to create lag in the golf swing?

How to create lag in the golf swing?

Keeping the angle between the lead arm and the shaft is one of the most difficult things to do for most amateurs.  The main reason is they want to start the downswing trying to create speed with the arms.  This has exactly the opposite effect of what the good golfer is trying to achieve.

Why lag?

Creating lag in the golf swing is trying to maintain the angle between the lead arm and the shaft.  Starting from the top of the backswing.  You are losing the critical angle when . . .

On Plane Swing

Swinging the mid irons “On Plane.”

Swinging the mid irons "On Plane."

Many of the golfers I teach do not really know what "Swing Plane" means or how to accomplish it.  The easiest way for me to describe it can be found in a book I read when I was starting out called "The 5 Modern Fundamentals"  by Ben Hogan.  Hogan demonstrated that when the golf swing moved along that pane of glass on the backswing, and then slightly inside the pane on the downswing, your swing was 'on plane'. (or on pane, ha ha) This was a great visual aid to me in my . . .
