The reverse pivot occurs when the spine angle is tilted forwards on the backswing.  This is caused either by putting all the weight on the lead foot on the backswing or allowing the rear hip to slide backwards in an attempt to place the weight on the rear leg.

The Cure:

I teach what I call the “baseball pitchers drill”.  Imagine a baseball pitcher standing on the mound and doing his windup.  His rear hip moves backward as his front foot raises up and his body rotates backward. If he allows his rear hip to sway backward he would lose his balance.  So to get this feel place your hands on your rear hip, try and extend your lead elbow out and around and you will get the proper feel of the correct hip turn.  The hip has rotated backward and the weight is now fully on the rear leg.  Like the baseball pitcher, you should be able to raise your front leg without losing your balance!

Once you have this feeling, pick up a club and try to duplicate that motion by shifting your weight to your rear leg while raising your front knee, just like a baseball pitcher.  Do this several times to get the correct feel. Then make a backswing keeping your front foot down but feeling the rear hip move backward putting the majority of the weight on the rear foot.  You will notice that the tilt of your spine angle is now backward instead of forwards.  You have now cured your reverse pivot.  Work on this continually until the movement feels natural before you try it out on the golf course!
