Chipping out of thick rough!

Chipping out of the thick grass can be a challenge.  Particularly if the grass is growing towards you.  The usual tendency is for the clubhead to get stuck in the grass causing a poor shot.  There is a simple way to improve your Chipping out of thick rough!

The Method.

Place the shaft in a more vertical position when you chip.  This will raise the heel off the ground and only the toe area of the club will make contact with the rough.  This allows the clubhead to pass much more easily through the grass with almost no “drag” of the club.  Get into a putting position with your eyes directly over the ball. You may even use your putting stroke and putting grip if you choose.

Head out to the range, find a spot where the grass is fairly thick, and practice this position so that when you are faced with this shot on the course, you will know exactly what to do!  The big key is knowing how hard to hit these shots.  You will be surprised how easily the club slides through the grass with this shot, so you will not have to swing as hard as your think.
