Today we discuss something I saw on the weekend at the Memorial Invitational where Bubba Watson had a buried lie in a bunker.  I feel Bubba could have got that ball out and on the green instead of just playing it to run down to the bottom of the bunker.  Watch Mel as he shows how to play this interesting shot!

To get the ball out of a buried lie, there are two big keys!

  1. Hood the clubface!  And I mean hood it.  Don't just close it slightly.  I want the club to dig!
  2. A very soft grip pressure.  Almost at zero.

Set up in your normal bunker stance, let your eyes still focus on a spot about 2" behind the ball. Swing hard, as there is going to be a lot of resistance from the sand.  The hooded club will dig in.  Because the grip pressure is soft, the clubface will twist to get the clubface square and under the ball.  And as you follow-through, the ball will gently sail out of the bunker!
