Putting Station Setup - Short Game Saturday #30.

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

A Golf Video Blog with the Mel Sole Golf School.

Today I will discuss how to properly evaluate break on a putt with a training aid called True Roller.

Unfortunately, the Tru Roller is no longer available but click on the link below to check out the Perfect Putter.  Works just as well.

Using the Roller.

By rolling the balls off this device, you get to control the distance the ball rolls past the hole.  Keep making adjustments until you get what I call "foot by speed."  This means that when the ball misses the hole, it will stop one foot past.  Keep moving the front edge of the roller until the balls start going in the hole.  You now have the perfect line and perfect pace.  Then place a putting mirror in front of the roller, aiming the black line on the mirror perpendicular to the roller.  You are now ready to start putting.

Start Putting.

You can now take the roller away and start your practice session, knowing that your putting station will quickly identify any speed or aim issues you may have.  As you can see in this video, I tended to aim to the right, or my putter face was open at impact. My speed was also a tad too soft.  I will continue to adjust my aim and speed until I can consistently roll the ball into the hole at the correct speed.  This putting station has now provided me with the feedback I need to improve my aim and speed.  I expect to putt it a lot better the next time out.

I will set up this station at least once a week so no bad habits will creep back into my putting stroke.

Here is the link I mentioned.  The product is called "The Perfect Putter."
