Most golfers are not members of fancy country clubs that have nice, fluffy sand.  Instead, they play public golf courses that intentionally have hard bunkers with very little sand because this helps keep the maintenance costs down.

The real secret to good bunker play is practice. When asked how often they practice bunker shots, I am amazed how many of my students say zero! Folks, I don't care who you are, even if your name is Tiger Woods.  If you do not practice bunker shots regularly, you will always be terrible out of bunkers!

Here are 3 things you must do to make your bunker shots more successful!

  1. Club selection is imperative.  You want to select a lob wedge, which has a lower bounce than a sand wedge.
  2. At the address, do not open the clubface!  The more you open the clubface, the more you bring the bounce into play!
  3. Aggressive swing!  Swing hard and drive the club at the ball.  This allows the club to still slide under the ball and produce a successful shot!
