New, custom-fitting equipment plus more practice & play can help to better your game. However, if you are really serious about lowering your handicap, taking golf lessons is your best route to improvement.

I always recommend an annual 3-day comprehensive golf school program, followed by individual lessons, but I realize some golfers only wish to take one-hour lessons. Therefore, I suggest the following tips to help you get the most benefit from your lessons.

1. Find a reputable teaching professional in your area.

Ask friends and other golfers, and then meet him/her to discuss teaching philosophies, your goals, etc. If the instructor doesn't seem to be in sync with you, look further.

2. Give the instructor any information about your game and the problems you're having.

Ask lots of questions, especially if you don't understand your teacher's analysis. He/she will find a different way to explain it until you are clear on things.

3. Don't try to impress the Pro.

By trying to hit perfect shots.  And don't be embarrassed by bad shots. The teacher needs to see what your regular tendencies are. Make sure the instructor shows you your swing on a video screen. Comparison analysis is crucial to the learning process. You can't see your swing while you're performing it, and often, perception doesn't match reality. If your teacher doesn't use video, find another teacher.

4. Design a practice plan with your Pro.

Must be goal-oriented and make sure you often communicate, particularly if you run into difficulties.

5. Don't take just one lesson!

My pet peeve, for years, has been overhearing a golfer saying, after taking just one lesson (with little or no follow-up practice), “That instructor completely screwed up my swing!”

6. Practice.

To learn to trust and ingrain good position and motions, you need to schedule a series of lessons... at least 10... separated by a week or two, during which time you practice the prescribed drills. Many experts recommend committing to 6 months of lessons – or 3 minimum – for great improvement.

Here is a video from Michael of Chalk Mountain Golf Club, who has some good advice on taking lessons.
