Today we talk about chipping and the multiple uses of an alignment stick to help you improve your chipping. Alignment sticks should be in your golf bag 24/7. Each time you are at the range, they will be available if you need them. Alignment sticks have so many uses, more than just alignment. I use them as a teaching aid for tons of different things. This helps students get the feel of something I am trying to teach them.
The Drill:
When you practice your chipping, take the first alignment stick and place it on the ground pointing very slightly left of your target. In this way, your clubface aims directly at your target. The second alignment stick is stuck vertically in the ground about 3 feet in front of you and lines with the ground's alignment stick. This is to make sure your clubhead moves directly to the target on the follow-through.
The third alignment stick is to make sure there is A) no cocking of the wrists on the backswing and B) that there is no breakdown on the follow-through. This second part is critical if you wish to become a good chipper! In all my 52 years of teaching, I have never seen a good chipper who breaks the lead wrist to execute this shot.
