A New Champion Golfer of the Year!

A New Champion Golfer of the Year!

Today is July 23rd, 2018 and we present A New Champion Golfer of the Year!  Monday Rewind #98.  A Golf Video Blog with Mel Sole, Director of Instruction and Master professional at the Mel Sole Golf School headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.

Please forgive the fuzziness in this video as it was a hot and humid morning and I did not realise that the lens had fogged up slightly.  The content is unaffected.

A New Champion Golfer of the Year!

What a great tournament!  To watch Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth go head to head was absolutely thrilling!  Congratulation to my pick earlier in the week Francesco Molinari who was crowned Champion Golfer of the Year!  First Italian to win a major!   Here are my takeaways from this fabulous Open Championship!

Gallery:  Definitely the most knowledgeable gallery in the world.  The were no screams of “Get in the Hole” “Babba Boey” or “Mashed Potatoes”  thank heaven.  One idiot screamed on Tigers backswing on the 18th tee of the final round.  I hope he has stomach cramps for the rest of his life!

Trains:  The UK has such a great train system.  Something that is really missing in the US.  People came from every corner of the UK directly to Carnoustie to watch the Open.

USA, USA.  Whats with that?  There are only three times that chant should be heard.  The Ryder Cup, The Presidents Cup and the Solheim Cup.  These are competitions against countries and it is OK to support your country.  However, the Open Championship (or any championship for that matter) is an individual competition.  Don’t show your lack of manners and education for all the world to see!

Players:

Peter Thompson:  Glad he was mentioned in the final prize giving ceremony.  Won 5 Open Championships in 1954, 55, 56, 58 and 1968.  Over a span of 21 years, only 3 times did he not finish in the top 10!

Tiger Woods: Started the year ranked 458th in the Wold.  In a short 7 months, he has climbed into the Top 50!  Wow!

Jordan Spieth:  Never seen such negative putting.  I did not keep a strict tally, but my guess is that Jordan left over 50% of his putts short.

John Rahm:  Has to learn to control his temper before he can win a Major!  The throwing clubs is getting old!

Adam Scott:  Sure does look like he is anchoring!  Look at his shoulders and his hands while he is putting.  They move in unison.  Just sayin’

Bernhardt Langer:  The ageless wonder!  To finish -1 at the age of 60 and on one of the toughest golf courses in the world elevates him into a new stratosphere!

And Finally, I think the future tournaments at Carnoustie should be played with a par of 70.  I think the 14th as a par 5 is a joke.  Players were hitting 5 irons and shorter into this green and on Thursday there were more eagles than pars.  Just think about that R&A!
