International Golf School Vacations » Scotland, August 2011

We use Thistle Golf and will highly recommend them to anyone traveling to Scotland: very professional and on the ball.

Friday, August 15 Depart JFK Airport, New York @ 6.00 pm for Glasgow, Scotland. Arrive at Glasgow International approximately 8.00am. (UK time is 5 hours ahead of US time).

Saturday, August 16 Upon your arrival in Glasgow, you will be met by your Golf Tour Manager and Driver, who will assist you with your luggage, and show you to your waiting luxury motor coach. This vehicle, which is air-conditioned, features reclining seats, TV and Video Player.

You will transfer to the Gailes Hotel & Restaurant near Troon. This afternoon, you will have free to relax and unpack. A welcome dinner will held this evening at the hotel.

Sunday, August 17 Today, golf will be arranged for you at Glasgow Gailes (6639 Yards, Par 71). Glasgow Golf Club was founded in 1787, seven years after the Town Council had started to issue permits for playing golf on Glasgow Green, although the records of the Kirk Session show that golf was being played in Glasgow almost 200 years before.

Non-golfers may wish to visit Burn's Heritage Trail. Scotland's most famous poet, Robert Burns, was born in the nearby county town of Ayr. Here you can visit the thatched cottage where he was born and also many of the places immortalized in his poems.

Interesting look at daily life over 200 years ago of author of Old Lang Syne, More interesting though by far is the Burrell Collection just outside Glasgow. On view is the most amazing exhibition of arts from 3 continents and 3 eras collected by one individual who deeded it to the city of Glasgow. Overnight at Gailes Hotel.

Monday August 18

Today, golf will be arranged for you at Western Gailes Golf Club. Western Gailes Golf Club, founded in 1897, is situated on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland where many of the finest Scottish golf links are located. It is recognised as one of the finest and true links courses in Scotland measuring 6899 yards from the championship tees. The course has played host to the Curtis Cup, PGA Championship, Seniors and prestigious Scottish Amateur Championship. It is also one of the final qualifying courses when The Open is played at Turnberry or Royal Troon.

The clubhouse, with its view of the hills of Arran and the sharp outline of Ailsa Craig standing out from the shimmering sea, gives an instant picture of the delights Western Gailes provides.

Non-golfers may wish to visit Culzean Castle. Home of the Kennedys, Culzean dates back to 1777 and is one of Robert Adams most notable creations. Culzean also has long associations with the USA, as General Eisenhower was given a suite of rooms here after the Second World War in appreciation by the British people. Culzean is surrounded by a country park which includes a walled garden established in 1783. One of the prettier castles and gardens. Eisenhower exhibit most interesting. Overnight at Gailes Hotel.

Tuesday August 19

Today we play at West Kilbride. The West Kilbride Golf Course is a championship links course offering top quality golf surrounded by beautiful scenery. The course itself comprises of 18 competitive holes with a total length of 6452 yards (5900m approx.)

Overnight at Nether Abbey Hotel in North Berwick.

Wednesday August 20

The Glen Golf Club is one of the most popular of East Lothian golf courses. Whether you have played golf in Scotland before, or if this is your first visit, the Glen is a golfing venue not to be missed. This North Berwick East Links course enjoys superb views across the Firth of Forth and provides an enjoyable test of golf for all levels of player.

This evening, tickets are provided to the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh on the castle esplanade, a wonderful and colorful pageant of military precision amidst the stirring pipe bands from Scotland and across the world. The tattoo is a very popular venue for overseas visitors to Scotland’s great capital. From its early days, the Edinburgh Tattoo has been an international favorite. Performers from 30 countries have presented here, and around 35 per cent of the 217,000 audience each year are from overseas. Overnight at Nether Abbey.

Thursday August 21

Today golf will be arranged at North Berwick Golf Club (6420 Yards, Par 71). The North Berwick Golf Club is the thirteenth oldest in the world, founded in 1832 by a group of local landowners and gentlemen, among them a soldier who fought in Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo. A list of past captains on the wall in the clubhouse proudly displays a distinguished past—knights, earls, lords, marquis and a former British Prime Minister, A.J. Balfour. Every hole is memorable. There are blind shots across the bay and bunkers in which you can disappear from sight. It's great fun, and a real test of skill. Overnight at Inn at Lathones.

Friday August 22

Today after breakfast we play Lundin Golf Club.

Lundin, founded in 1868, on a Tom Morris course which was extensively redesigned in 1908-09 by five times Open Champion James Braid, is well known throughout the golfing world as a course of rare quality.

Fine links fairways and excellent greens have ensured that it has been regularly selected as a final qualifying course for the Open Championship. Narrow fairways, bunkers, burns, and ever-changing winds guarantee a testing but rewarding golfing experience.

Non-golfers you may wish to visit the town of St. Andrews. It is a fascinating town with a wealth of history, not only associated with golf. It was the ecclesiastical center of Scotland for many years before the reformation and houses the oldest university in Britain.

Excellent town for shopping and visiting the ruins of the old Cathedral, etc. Golfers should make a point of visiting the Cathedral to visit the graves of Old Tom Morris and his young Tom Morris who was the first golfers to win the Open Championship three consecutive times, thus earning him the right to keep the coveted belt and the Claret Jug was then given as the trophy and still is to this day! Overnight at Inn at Lathones.

Saturday August 23

Today after breakfast, golf will be arranged for you at Kingsbarns. With a prime piece of property located just 10 miles to the southeast of St. Andrews, the Kingsbarns project was an ambitious one, as a team of great golf minds set out to become one of the world’s elite courses. Architect Kyle Phillips and co-owner Mark Parsinen have accomplished the goal they began laying out in the mid-1990s, as the course's opening in 1999 garnered a great deal of attention and acclaim in a region where the standard of golf is as high as anywhere else in the world. In just four short years, Kingsbarns has established a reputation as lofty as that of the Old Course and Carnoustie, two world-class courses with which Kingsbarns hosts the Dunhill Cup each year. Our tee times are from 12 noon.

Non-golfers may wish to visit Falkland Palace. This is a lovely Royal Palace in a picturesque little town. The buildings of the Palace, in Renaissance style, date from 1501-15. This was a favorite seat of James V and his daughter, Mary Queen of Scots. The Royal Tennis Court of 1539 is still played on today.

Kingsbarns(Non-golfers may wish to visit Glamis Castle – Glamis dates back to the 9th century and is possibly the most spectacular of all the Scottish castles. It was the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother and the birthplace of her daughter, the Princess Margaret. Glamis was also the setting for Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Gorgeous castle. President Bush and his wife and other leaders stayed here while attending the 2005 G8 summit. Letters and pictures from Queen Elizabeth's visit as a child to this home of her grandparents are interesting. The included tour is excellent.

A farewell dinner will be held tonight at the hotel.

Sunday August 24

We will play either St. Andrew New or St. Andrews Jubilee Courses.

Non-golfers may wish to visit the East Neuk. The East Neuk is fringed with fishing villages, each with its harbor backed by steep, narrow streets and attractive vernacular buildings. Pittenweem, meaning "place of the cave" is typical with a large double harbor and it is home to the Fife fishing fleet. The fascinating Scottish Fisheries Museum at Anstruther is housed in a number of 14th- to 18th-century buildings grouped around a cobbled courtyard. Crail is a photogenic village and the Town Hall has the oldest bell in Fife. Fife Ness is the most easterly point in Fife and is a birdwatchers paradise.

Overnight The Hilton at Edinburgh Airport
