This vacation always sells out, so book early to avoid disappointment!

This golf vacation to South Africa is hosted by Mel & Rosemary Sole, and was fully booked in 1999, 2006 and 2009. We take a maximum of 16 golfers. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Below is the Itinerary from our 2009 golf trip to South Africa.

Please note: South Africa is 6 hours ahead of the EST zone.

Wednesday, October 19.

3:50 pm Departure JFK via South African Airways. (approx schedule, to be updated when 2009 flight details are available)

Thursday, October 20.

Arrive Johannesburg 3.50 pm. Depart for Cape Town 5.00 pm and arrive 7.10pm.

Transfer to Table Bay Hotel, Cape Town.

After checking into your hotel, spend the rest of the day and evening exploring the surrounding area. The Victoria & Albert Waterfront is beautiful and has terrific shops, restaurants, etc.

The Table Bay Hotel is located in the well-known Victoria & Alfred Waterfront complex with Table Mountain providing a classic backdrop, the hotel has an elegant Victorian exterior and is in total harmony with the historical ambience of the area. Attention to detail and international flair recalls the era of the great cruise liners and the grand hotels that served them. Accommodation is provided in 329 en suite rooms. Amenities include a fax machine, satellite-linked television, a personal electronic safe and a butler station. The hotel also offers a fully equipped gym, sauna and spa, Jacuzzi, swimming pool and beauty clinic. The Atlantic Grill Room and Terrace offers a la carte dining, and an impressive cellar displays over 6000 of the best Cape wines. Lighter meals can be enjoyed in the Conservatory Restaurant while listening to a resident jazz band. Victorian high tea is a tradition at Table Bay, enjoyed to the accompaniment of soothing chamber music.
Friday, October 21.

Today you will be met by a representative and transferred to Arabella Golf Course for 18 holes of golf by private vehicle (approx 1 hour from Cape Town.)

The Arabella golf course in South Africa is ranked by Compleat Golfer magazine as the number one golf course in the Western Cape. It is also featured in Golf Digest’s USA’s Top 60 courses outside of America in 2007. Designed and built in 1999 by celebrated South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich, who is also credited with the design of Western Cape courses de Zalze and Steenberg, this classic parkland course has spectacular views across the Bot River lagoon and across the Kogelberg mountain range. The pristine fairways are kikuyu, while the greens, which frequently receive high praise from professionals in the game, are Dominant Bent.

The golf course has been refined in the past six years with the addition of several bunkers and the revamp of the par-four 6th hold in order to rid it of its blind tee shot. Awarded Five-Star Golf Experience for the first time in 2002, the course is complemented by a luxurious clubhouse with bar and halfway house, as well as a fully stocked pro shop and excellent practice area with two resident teaching professionals.

Caddie Cost – R120 ($18) Cart – R230 ($32) Note: Cost of cart is the same whether one person or two ride.

Saturday, October 22.

You will be collected from Table Bay Hotel and taken on a half day Cape Town City tour & Table Mountain tour or optional golf day. (Golfing not included in cost.)

Depart the hotel and drive up Kloof Nek between Table Mountain and Signal Hill to Tafelberg Road and the lower cable station. Board the new Rotair cable car that takes less than 5 minutes to reach the summit of Table Mountain, 1036 meters above sea level. The views of the city and surrounding area are spectacular and you will have a chance to walk around the top of the “TABLE” to view various parts of the city.

The famous Table Mountain dominates the Peninsula’s northern skyline and it is South Africa’s best known landmark. Sculptured from sandstone, it rises 1 086 meters above the bay; its flat summit measures nearly 3 kilometers from end to end and, on clear days it can be seen from about 200 kilometers (about 120 miles) out to sea.

The new cableway was opened in 1997. These new cable cars (there are two, which run simultaneously) each carry up to 65 people. The Swiss-designed cars can travel at nine meters a second (the average speed is six meters) and the floor does a 360-degree revolution during the 5 minute ascent, so no matter where you stand, an ever-changing vista unfolds before you.

Your return to the city is via the Bo-Kaap, the Cape Malay quarter. Leaving the vehicle, you will walk through Government Avenue where the original settlers planted their vegetable gardens. Today, it is home to the South African Museum, Cultural History Museum, Houses of Parliament, National Gallery and St George’s Cathedral. Your walk through the city continues to the old Town Square bustling with the market traders of Greenmarket Square and St.George’s Mall.

For those who wish to pay golf instead of doing the Table Mountain tour, you can play the Milnerton Golf Club: Green Fees R385 ($55) Cart: R170($24) Caddie R120($18)

Milnerton Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 72 seaside course situated in a leafy suburb just 10 minutes north of the city of Cape Town. Surrounded by natural beauty, the course is a pleasure to the senses and a challenge to even the most experienced golfer – especially when the prevailing South Easter, affectionately known as the “Cape Doctor” – makes her house calls in the summer months! Nestled between the Atlantic ocean and the RietVlei river, this lush links-type course is relatively flat with few trees. But with the sea and the lagoon bordering most holes, and the 7 beautiful water holes waiting to claim the wayward shot, it offers a truly unique golfing experience! Typical of many links-type courses, you will play the first 9 holes out, enjoy a light meal at the halfway house, and then return back to the clubhouse via the second 9.

Overnight at the Table Bay Hotel.

Sunday, October 23.

Today you will be met by a representative and transferred to Spier De Zalze Golf Course for 18 holes of golf by private vehicle.

The name “De Zalze” originates from the early wine farmers who produced wines on the three adjoining farms, namely Kleine Zalze, Groote Zalze and De Vleie, in the region. The historical buildings on the estate date back to 1838. De Zalze Golf Course was opened for play in November 2000 under the name Spier Country Club. It was only in December 2003 with the opening of the new clubhouse that it changed to trade as De Zalze Golf Club, in line with the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate development. Spier, together with Kleine Zalze, have redesigned the estate to make it one of the most sought after golf real estate properties in the Cape Winelands and South Africa. De Zalze offers a fine mix of parkland holes, its main defences being the water features on several of the holes. The oak-lined Blaauwklippen River winds its way through the golf estate and comes into play at various intervals. Renowned golf course architect, Peter Matkovich, designed the De Zalze Golf Course, making most of the stunning setting while placing a premium on accuracy. Since the opening in 2000, the club was quick to reap rewards. De Zalze was selected to host the 2006 World Amateur Team Championships, moved from 44th to 24th in the latest Golf Digest Top 100 Courses, was recently placed 13th in the Top 30 Best Conditioned courses and De Zalze also received a service-orientated “Five-Star Golf Experience” Award, managed by Compleat Golfer, joining only 14 other courses out of over 450 courses in South Africa to achieve this honour.

Caddie R145 ($21) Cart Hire R220 ($32) Note: Cost of cart is the same whether one person or two ride

This afternoon we will visit David Frost Vineyard and have lunch with David. Afterwards he will take us on a tour of his winery. On our last trip everyone listed this as one of the highlights of the tour!

Overnight at the Table Bay Hotel.

Monday, October 24.

Private transfer from Table Bay Hotel to Fancourt Hotel.

The Fancourt Hotel & Country Club, situated in the heart of the Garden route, is set in 515 hectares of lush countryside with the Outeniqua Mountains as a backdrop. The history of Fancourt goes back to 1847 when Henry Fancourt White established a worker’s base at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. The original “Manor House” has since been declared a National Monument. Accommodation at Fancourt is a combination of old world charm and contemporary luxury. The 100 rooms come with a choice of Superior Rooms, Studios or one and two bedroom Garden Suites. A choice of 5 restaurants afford guests a wide range of cuisines, and three bars and a golfer’s halfway house offer light meals.

Fancourt is famed for its four 18-hole Gary Player designed championship golf courses. There is also a Golf Academy and a Golf School. The Golf Shop offers a wide range of golf clothing and equipment. Fancourt has a Health and Beauty Pavilion complete with a heated Roman Bath and Jacuzzi as well as a hair salon. There are also saunas, steam rooms and gym. Other facilities include four tennis courts, squash, two outdoor swimming pools, an indoor heated family pool and bowls. There are crèche facilities and children’s programmes are available on request. Mountain bikes are available for hire and picnics, horse riding and walks can be arranged on request. Guests can make use of the Glentana Beach House, a cottage overlooking the Indian Ocean, for overnight getaways, or Oaklands, a private home on the Fancourt Estate with its own security, private garden and Butler service. Fancourt is ideally positioned to allow guests to explore the Garden Route, indigenous forest of Tsitsikamma and the Knysna Lagoon.

Overnight at the Fancourt Hotel and Golf Estate.

Tuesday, October 25.

Play Fancourt Links Course.

The Links at Fancourt is without doubt the most impressive piece of golf design and construction ever in South Africa. Fancourt owner Dr Hasso Plattner, who took a very hands-on function in the creation, commissioned a golf course, which would not only be a thorough test for every golfer, but would also rank among the top courses in the world. Player’s design team spent months studying the classic links courses of Scotland and Ireland and then, armed with inspiration from the best that those countries had to offer, embarked on the ambitious task of recreating some of their finest holes to make a genuine links test on what was once an airfield. The result is awe-inspiring and has elicited praise from some of the world’s finest golfers – The Links was the host venue for the 2003 Presidents Cup, which ended in an historic tie after a dramatic play-off between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els. In early 2005, it was the host venue for the Women’s World Cup of Golf, which was won by the diminutive duo of Rui Kitada and Ai Miyzato of Japan.

Golf at the Outeniqua Course at Fancourt.

Designer: Gary Player Design Co.

Distance: Champ 6 450m (7 038 yds), Club 5 981m (6 572), Par 72

The Outeniqua Golf Course was named after the mountain range that runs along the Garden route coast. This parkland layout is not as popular as Montagu and the Links, but mainly due to aesthetics and nothing more. The Outeniqua Golf Course takes in a setting of mountains, water and wildlife. It’s cleverly designed, picturesque, and presents a challenge to golfers of all levels. The Outeniqua short par-four 4th will keep big hitters guessing whether or not to go for it and face the risk of the waterway that dominates the right side of the green and fairway, or play it safe and lay-up! Since golf at Fancourt is limited to members, their guest and hotel guests have ample time to play at their own pace and take in the golfing experience that is Fancourt.

Cart R335 ($49) Caddie R195 ($29)

Overnight at the Fancourt Hotel and Golf Estate.

Thursday, October 27.

Day of leisure.

Optional tour to Cango Caves & Ostrich Farm with lunch – cost R275.00 per person (approx $40 USD, not included in the overall trip cost.)

In 1780, a colonial farmer lowered himself into the unknown darkness of what was to become known as the Cango Caves. By the dim light of a burning torch, he saw the glistening mounds and crystal-like shapes of the stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone formations. So began the human history of one of the oldest natural attractions in South Africa. For more than 20 million years, rainwater has flowed through fissures and seeped through cracks in the earth’s surface, scouring and dissolving rock and limestone to form the vast halls and tunnels of the Cango cave systems. Amenities at the visitor’s complex include a curio shop, museum, coffee shop and bar, and interpretation center. A variety of tours are led by experienced and knowledgeable guides, and are graded according to length and difficulty.

Safari Ostrich Farm is an operating farm where visitors will see large flocks of ostriches at different stages of development in the surrounding fields. Visitors are assured of personal attention and upon their arrival are greeted by one of our multi-lingual guides who will, during the course of the tour explain every aspect of ostrich farming, from breeding to rearing. The tour starts in the breeding camp, with a nest of ostrich eggs, where the first stage of the ostrich life cycle is explained. Visitors will get the opportunity to test the strength of the eggs by standing on them – a great photo opportunity. During the breeding season visitors get to see ostrich eggs hatching in the incubator rooms. Visitors get to sit on an ostrich and those who are brave enough can even try their hand at riding one. Every tour ends with an “Ostrich Derby” where local jockeys display their riding skills. A highly entertaining and educational tour is guaranteed.

Or

Optional 18 holes at Montague Course at Fancourt. Green Fees: R805 ($115) Cart Fees: R290 ($42) Caddie : R200 ($30) This is not included in the overall trip cost.

The Montague is a much celebrated parkland course and has been ranked as the number-one golf course in South Africa in the past. It has recently undergone major renovations with several holes being redesigned and has two completely new holes – the 1st and the 9th. “With golf critics becoming more discerning and the increase in new modern courses, we believed it was time to rejuvenate the Montagu layout and improve the course immeasurably,” says Resort General Manager, Ingrid Diesel. ” We believe the new-look course, which has now grown in superbly, has been restored to its former glory where it will once again hold its head high amongst the best in the world.”

The first tee of the famous Old Course is only a 7 iron away and a brief, leisurely stroll takes you to the heart of St. Andrews. A traditionally built 3 story hotel, it features 2 dining areas and a lounge bar which is popular with locals and residents alike. Care has been taken to preserve the character of the building during refurbishment; the public areas feature an extensive collection of period antiques lending the hotel a feeling of genuine warmth and friendliness that’s often missing in many of today’s hotels.

Thursday, August 9

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged on the St. Andrews New Course.

Opened in April 1895, the course was built in response to increasing demand for golf at St Andrews. The New Course is a classic links course which uses the natural features of the land to create a first class golfing challenge. The course has the traditional out and back layout, with the 18th green just to the right of the first tee. It also has, in the great St Andrews tradition, shared fairways and even a double green at the 3rd and 15th holes. It has frequently been said that if the New Course were not situated next to the Old, then its star would have shown with a far greater degree of brilliance.

After golf you may like to tour St. Andrews. Known as the home of golf, and home of Scotland’s oldest university, St Andrews is a small town with a sizeable reputation that attracts visitors from all over the world. St Andrews University, founded in 1410, dominates the centre of town. The elegant, ivy-clad buildings and delightful quadrangles and gardens have seen a procession of famous graduates, recently including Prince William. The future king may have graduated, but it is still one of the top universities in Britain, often compared to Oxford and Cambridge for its defining presence and the collegiate feel it gives to the town. The Medieval centre of St Andrews, with its narrow alleys and cobbled streets, leads to the now ruined cathedral (once the largest in Scotland) and the adjacent church of St Regulus, where you can climb the spiral staircase to the top of an 108-foot tower for magnificent views of the town and its surroundings. The castle, perched on a promontory overlooking the sea, was the dramatic stage for several of the most notorious episodes of the Reformation. St Andrews has two great beaches, one being the West Sands, where the famous opening sequence of Chariots of Fire was shot. There are also the Botanic Gardens for relaxation.

Overnight at the Scores Hotel.

Friday, August 10

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged at Carnoustie Golf Links.

Regarded by many including Walter Hagen and Gary Player as one of the best links in the world, Carnoustie, though certainly long, is not a course for the unthinking big-hitter. With judgment of wind and distance critical, every tee shot needs careful placement to set up an approach to the green. Whilst there may be little dramatic background scenery, the beauty of Carnoustie is to be found in the golf course itself. The layout is such that no two consecutive holes face the same direction, a factor that does nothing for the golfer in finding their rhythm in the face of often-stiff winds. Carnoustie’s famous burns that snake their way around the course – Jockie’s Burn and the Barry Burn represent two more obstacles to posting a respectable tally.

After golf you may like to visit Glamis Castle. Five miles from Forfar, in the fertile valley of Strathmore, is the quaint village of Glamis. Glamis is set in the rolling hills of Angus, approximately 20km from the North Sea, in an area of considerable ancient history. Whilst the village is home to a curious old stone, said to be a monument to King Malcolm II, and some attractive eighteenth-century cottages, its most notable attribute is the grandeur of Glamis Castle. The modern visitor approaching the Highland Castle for the first time cannot but draw breath in admiration as he journeys down the mile-long avenue rich in color, flanked in spring by swathes of yellow and cream daffodils, or the colors in the rows of autumn trees. Spires, turrets, towers and statues will seize your attention initially, but there is so much more to explore in this legendary Castle. With its strong links with history, royalty and fiction, Glamis Castle is one of Scotland’s most impressive visitor attractions. Whether you choose to visit Glamis to admire its stunning architecture, to explore its history, legends and myths or to enjoy the surrounding beauty of the and grounds and gardens, you will not fail to be touched by the magic of Glamis.

Saturday, August 11

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged on the St. Andrews Castle Course.

St Andrews Links Trust is creating a seventh eighteen hole course to join its portfolio of six courses. The Castle Course opened in the summer of 2008. Following the coastline east of St Andrews, The Castle Course is two miles from the town centre. The designer, David McLay Kidd, creator of Bandon Dunes on the West Coast of America, has created a typical Scottish golf experience. Each hole has a choice of five tees and the course will be playable between about 5300-7200 yards.

After golf you may like to visit the village of Crail. Out of all Fife’s East Neuk villages, the village of Crail has the most picturesque harbour. From Crail’s wide main street, steep cobble-stoned wynds run down to it, this being the older part of the village. Painters and landscape photographers spend hours here. The small anchorage caters mainly for lobster and crab fishing boats and lobster creel-markers are seen in the water all along the coast. The upper streets of the village are more spacious with the Tolbooth at its centre behind which is the small Crail Museum and Heritage Centre giving an insight into the burgh’s history.

Overnight at the Scores Hotel

Kingsbarnes Golf Club - Photo by Brian Morgan

Sunday, August 12

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged at Kingsbarns Golf Club.

Located directly on the North Sea coast only six miles from St. Andrews, Kingsbarns is without a doubt one of the most breathtaking links courses ever developed. Kingsbarns Golf Links is a real one of a kind and a contrast with Scotland’s other famous links courses in that it is a new, man-made development. The sea figures prominently on every hole and one’s senses are continually pricked with the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean spray. The links boasts spacious fairways, which roll and twist through majestic dune ridges and hollows, while its large inviting greens present the golfer with subtle challenges.

After golf you may like to visit Falkland Palace. Falkland has been a royal place since the days of the Stewarts. King James II adopted it as a royal home (it had earlier been a castle of the MacDuff family) and it was used as a hunting lodge in the 12th century. In those days the Forest of Falkland had stags and wild boar and falconry was a popular sport. The massive gatehouse, through which visitors access the Palace today, was completed by James V although most of the adjoining facade of the building was completed by James IV. This is the part of the Palace which was restored in the 19th century by the Hereditary Keeper of the Palace, the 3rd Marquess of Bute. He refurbished the interior of the South Range, creating a comfortable home for himself. His son continued the good work by recreating a beautiful chapel which had originally been built by James V. Only the external walls of the East Range are still standing and there is no trace left of the North Range. In addition to the Palace, a large and lovely garden has been created, full of well manicured lawns, mature trees and colorful flowers. Even without the Palace, this would be worth a visit on its own.

Overnight at the Scores Hotel.

St. Andrews Old Course - Photo by Brian Morgan

Monday, August 13

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged on the St. Andrews Old course.

Handicap Limit – Men: 24, Ladies: 36.

The oldest golf course in the world has many remarkable features which help make it so special to golfers around the world. It is the Home of Golf where golf was first played 600 years ago and yet it remains a real test of golf for today’s champions. Despite its reputation and status, it is a public course. The course is known for its particular physical features including 112 bunkers, some of which are especially famous e.g. ‘Hell’ on the long 14th, ‘Strath’ on the short 11th and the Road Bunker at what is probably the most famous golf hole in the world, the 17th or Road Hole (so called because a road – which is in play – runs hard against the back edge of the green). The Old Course’s truly remarkable feature is that in today’s modern golfing world, a course which has evolved over six centuries remains a true test of championship golf.

After golf you may like to continue touring St. Andrews.

Overnight at the Scores Hotel.

Crail Balcomie Course

Tuesday, August 14

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged on the Crail Balcomie Course.

Crail Golfing Society celebrated their bi-centenary in 1986 hosts two courses. The Balcomie, the shorter of the two, is an unusual course in that the holes have been laid out with the front nine containing six par fours and the back nine only three. There have also been some interesting names given to the holes, such like Fluke Dub (4th), Hell’s Hole (5th) and Lang Whang all good Scots names. The 5th Hell’s Hole does live up to its name, with the decision to be brave and chance the ball over the rocks and beach or just to play safe. Onto the last few holes you will find their challenge are only made more daunting with knowing that the onlookers from the clubhouse will be watching your every stroke

After golf you will transfer to North Berwick and the Marine Hotel.

Picturesquely located at the heart of the East Lothian golfing-coast, The Marine Hotel overlooks the 16th hole of North Berwick’s championship links. Standing in landscaped grounds in the harbour town and encompassing superb views of the breathtaking Firth of Forth, the Marine Hotel’s Victorian façade conceals a wealth of creature comforts and delights to be discovered.

The Marine Hotel

The Marine Hotel offers guests 83 well-appointed, individually decorated en-suite guestrooms, including six four-posters, five suites and four mini-suites. Each provides guests with a range of facilities and golf aficionados should opt for one of the rooms offering views over the sea and golf course. The Craigleith Restaurant is renowned for its superb Scottish and international menu, while the 19th Hole Bar is a favorite haunt of visitors and locals alike.

Overnight at the Marine Hotel.

Wednesday, August 15

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged at Dunbar Golf Club.

Designed by Old Tom Morris around 1850, Dunbar East links situated on the estuary of the Firth of Forth, is a breathtaking layout of a Championship links course that stretches across 6404 yards of coastal terrain. All of the major Scottish Championships have been played here, The Scottish Amateur, Professional Championship and Scottish Boys’ Championship. It has been used as an Open qualifier on several occasions in the past. Situated on a narrow strip of land which follow the contours of a rocky exposed beach, bordered on the other side by the Old Deer Park wall making it a challenging course for all levels of players.

Dunbar Golf Club

After golf you may like to tour Edinburgh. Edinburgh is a city where there is almost always a view with the New Town and the Old Town providing a backdrop to a city rich in history and positively teeming with culture. The city is a feast for the eye, a series of dramatic contrasts, with its famous castle, stunning skylines and magnificent architecture. The city is compact, one that you can stroll around in comfort – yet large enough to entertain people of all ages, with all kinds of interests. The Old Town revolves around the Royal Mile with Edinburgh Castle, guarding centuries of history, standing dominant and proud at one end-looming over Princes Street Gardens, while at the other end is the Palace of Holyroodhouse which has for centuries been a residence for the British Royal Family.

There is an abundance of choice of the discerning shopper. Modern airy shopping malls such as the St. James Centre or Waverley Shopping Centre reflect more modern times. All the main high street chain stores are featured and the new out of town development at the Gyle offers Marks and Spencer and Saveway stores as well as a collection of small boutiques.

Overnight at the Marine Hotel.

Thursday, August 16

North Berwick Golf Club

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged at North Berwick Golf Club.

Measuring 6317 yards, it’s no monster in length, but such is its trickery that it demands a full repertoire of shot making. Founded in 1832, the club is one of the oldest in the world. Former Prime Minister, Lord Balfour, was captain here in 1891-92. Every hole is memorable – there are blind shots across the bay, and bunkers in which you can disappear from sight. It is great fun and a real test of skill

After golf you may like to visit Tantallon Castle. The Tantallon Castle with its high curtain walls stands precariously at the edge of an abrupt cliff-face. It was the Red Douglases who dwelt within its walls, actually renting it from the Earls of Fife and keeping a well-trained army to maintain their independence. From the car park it is a pleasant walk to the castle frontage revealing more of the castle’s defenses in the form of as a series of earthworks and ditches designed to protect against James V’s cannon when he laid siege here in 1529. The dramatic landscapes will not disappoint.

Overnight at the Marine Hotel.

Friday, August 17

Today after breakfast you will transfer to Gullane and the Greywalls Hotel.

Greywalls Hotel

The Greywalls Hotel is one of the most revered golf hotels of all times whose hospitality has been enjoyed by the most famous names in the world of golf. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed the original house in 1901 and since that time additions have taken place but always in keeping with the original style and proportions. It is a most beautiful hotel, with its features of refined surroundings, charming and elegant furnishings, bedrooms furnished in period style, superb cuisine and service of the highest order.

Today golf will be arranged at Muirfield Golf Club.

Handicap Limit – Men: 18, Ladies: 20.

Muirfield is the home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and is the most exclusive golf club in the U.K. Founded in 1744, the existing course is designed in two loops of nine holes. Players have a constantly changing battle with the wind, and the beautifully constructed bunkers (over 150 in total), which never allow a bad shot to escape, are a great feature of the course.

Overnight at the Greywalls Hotel.

Saturday, August 18

Today after breakfast you will depart Scotland for home.

Imagine... 10 days of golfing Ireland's most stunning courses, coupled with luxurious accommodations, accompanied by one of the world's most respected golf instructors. Don't miss out on our 2011 golf school vacation to Ireland!

View photos from our 2007 Golf School Vacation to Ireland here. My reviews of the courses and hotels are in red below.

Friday, August 17 Depart JFK Airport, New York @ 7.10pm on Delta #112 for Dublin, Ireland. Arrive Dublin 7.05 am. (Ireland time is 5 hours ahead of US time.)

Saturday, August 18 Upon your arrival in Dublin you will be met by your Golf Tour Manager and Driver, who will assist you with your luggage and show you to your waiting luxury motor coach. This vehicle, which is air-conditioned, features reclining seats, TV & Video Player. Transfer to the Grand Hotel in Malahide, where early check-in has been arranged. Drive time from airport – 20 minutes. This afternoon golf will be arranged at Portmarnock Golf Club. First tee time is 3.50pm. Portmarnock has hosted the lions share of The Carrols Irish Open Championships over the last several decades. It displays, what many consider, the finest use of bunkering on any course in any country. Fairly straightforward in nature, there are perils for missing nearly every green or fairway. The 14th and 15th are Portmarnock’s most famous holes with the former being described by Sir Henry Cotton as “the best golf hole in the world.” Played with a prevailing right to left wind off the sea, the par 3 15th may call for as much as a driver, and nearly requires you to send your ball out over the boundary fence and allow the strong breeze to bring it safely to the green.

Portmarnock is a great golf course, unfortunately this day it rained and we did not get to experience this course at its best. I did think that the greens were in pretty poor shape for this time of the year. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate this a 7.

Overnight at The Grand Hotel.

The Grand Hotel was convienient, but having stayed at the Portmarnock Hotel attached to the Portmarnock Golf Club in the past I would reccommend that over the Grand Hotel. rating – 5

Sunday, August 19 Today after breakfast golf will be arranged at European Club. First tee time is 10.40 am.

The European Golf Club is not for sissies! This is a tough course and as they do not allow caddies, you have no help. I would not recommend this course for high handicappers. The staff at European Club were outstanding and made us feel very welcome and were the most hospitable of all the courses by far! I would rate this a 7 (for lower handicap players)

Overnight at the Grand Hotel.

Monday, August 20 Today after breakfast you will transfer to Iragh Ti Connor Guest Inn.

Íragh Tí Connor (“The Inheritance of O’Connor”) takes its name from lands held by Ciar, the first King of Kerry and his descendants, the O’Connors, who ruled the Kingdom of Kerry for over 1,000 years.

John & Joan O’Connor invite you to relax in the luxury 17 bedroom country home. The 19th Century building has recently been refurbished to the highest standard with all modern conveniences.

Íragh Tí Connor is situated within its own walled gardens at the top of Main Street, Ballybunion. This provides a unique combination of easy access to the bustle of Ballybunion whilst still preserving the privacy of the discerning guest.

A very relaxed atmosphere where you get to meet many of the locals in their frindly pub. John and Jean made sure our stay was enjoyable. Wireless internet in all the rooms was a plus. Rating – 6.

Day is free for sightseeing.

Tuesday August 21st After breakfast golf will be arranged at Ballybunion Old Course. First tee time is 8.50am.

Ballybunion is a place of giant sandhills and deep valleys. Herbert Warren Wind, the most famous of all golf writers, once stated, “Ballybunion revealed itself to be nothing less than the finest seaside course I have ever seen.” Tom Watson has often lavished the Old Course with nothing but the highest praise. From the opening hole, bordered on the right by a cemetery, the links of Ballybunion is a treat for the senses. The non-golfers may like to visit the Gap of Dunloe. This is a four mile gulch carved by glaciers. The trip can be accomplished in part or entirely by pony trap. The boulders rise high on either side and several seemingly bottomless tarns converge to form a surging stream that runs alongside the road. From the top of the gap the views are breathtakingly compounded by purple mountains, the Upper Lake and the Cummeenduff rolling into the hills.

Ballybunion is my favorite course in the whole world and it did not disappoint! This is a must play, but let me warn you – book early to guarantee tee times. This was the favorite with all our group. They treated us well and the caddy master made sure all our group has at least 2 caddies in each group. Rating – 10

After golf, transfer to the Plaza Hotel, Killarney.

Killarney Plaza Hotel was terrific! It is situated right in the middle of Killarney and has easy access to all the shops and restaurants. I will definitely use this hotel again on future trips. Staff were great, and again wireless internet access in all the rooms was a plus. Rating – 8.

Wednesday, August 22 The morning round is at Waterville Golf Club. First tee time is 12.50 pm. This Championship links course cresting the Atlantic Ocean has been described as “a magnificent monster” by Sam Snead, and was so loved by it’s founder John Mulcahy that his ashes are buried under the tee box on the seventeenth hole. Played from the Championship tees, it is the longest of the Irish courses, and certainly, some may argue, the hardest. It possesses four of the finest par 3′s in all of Ireland. Golfers may like to tour the Ring of Kerry. This is a hundred mile route around the Iveragh Peninsula, which is one of the world’s great scenic drives. This route, an amazing mixture of rugged mountains, winding valleys and dramatic seascapes, begins and ends in Killarney.

Waterville is another must play. The views are terrific and the course was in great shape. Rating 8.

Overnight at the Killarney Plaza Hotel.

Thursday, August 23 Today after breakfast golf will be arranged at Tralee Golf Club. First tee time is 12.06pm. The course at Barrow is the creation of Arnold Palmer. No critic may claim that this is an “Americanized” golf course. Palmer has created a pure, unabashed links-style golf course on fertile, rugged Irish soil. The front nine plays nicely on open flat land with several memorable golf holes. It is the back nine at Tralee that grabs your attention, with its absorbing mix of mountainous dunes, carries over cavernous valleys, and a stretch of unforgettable seaside holes. Golfers may like to visit Dingle Peninsula. Here the dramatic mountains sweep down to golden beaches and stark rocks. The greens of the hills in contrast with the wildness of the scenes make Dingle an enchanted place. Dingle is a native Gaelic speaking area and the lilt of this ancient tongue adds an extra element of mystery to this hauntingly beautiful place.

Like Waterville, Tralee is a great Irish seaside links course that must not be missed. Rating 8.

Overnight at Killarney Plaza Hotel.

Friday, August 24. Today you play Old Head at 11.15am.

The Old Head of Kinsale is one of the most remarkable developments ever conceived in the history of golf. The Old Head is ideally located on the south coast of Ireland. The course was designed by a combination of Ireland’s greatest past golfing heroes and recognized international contemporary design experts – led by Joe Carr, Ron Kirby, Paddy Merrigan and Eddie Hackett. Non-Golfers may like to sightsee in Cork. Cork is the second city of the Republic and claims to be the cultural capital. Built on an island formed by two channels of the River Lee, Cork was a monastic settlement in the 17th century. Later plundered by Norse invaders, it became a thriving center of commerce. There are many architectural pleasures to be discovered in the city, including the French Gothic cathedral and St. Anne’s Shandon, where the famous Bells of Shandon are played on request

I was in heaven! To play Old Head is always a pleasure, but to play Old Head in beautiful sunshine, and very little wind is a rarety. What spectacular views. One of our participants said to me, “I have only one complaint: the views were so beautiful I couldn’t concentrate on my golf game!” Rating – 9.

Today after golf you will transfer to the 5 Star Adare Manor in Adare, County Limerick.

Adare Manor was terrific and the staff exceptional. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay. Although we did not play the course at adare, four of our group went out early one morning for 9 holes a proclaimed it a great test. I will most probably add this course to our itinerary in the future. Rating – 8.

Saturday, August 25

Lahinch Golf Club. Tee times start at 2.10pm. Known as the “St. Andrews of Ireland”, the Old Course was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris. It is a classic Irish Links in every sense with plenty of blind shots, cavernous bunkers, and large, sweeping sand dunes. Holes number 5 & 6 (The Dyke and The Dell) propose that you play completely blind to your target area, and the latter has a volcanic-like green setting. A visit to Lahinch is a must for any student of the game.

Lahinch is another classic. Similar to Ballybunion but the views not quite as spectacular. Definitely a must play. Rating – 8.

Golfers may like to visit Cliffs of Moher. They stand on the edge of Ireland with the Atlantic crashing on the rocks 700 feet below and look out on the Arran Islands in the distance. A few miles from the coast is one of the strangest landscapes in Ireland, the Burren. Here there are fascinating neo-lithic tombs called dolmens, and concealed in the fissures of the rocks are some of the most exotic flora and fauna that lure botanists from around the world. And underneath are the Ailwee Caves.

Overnight at Adare Manor.

Sunday, August 26 Golf today is at Doonbeg at 2.48pm.

Doonbeg is a much anticipated links on some of Irelands most attractive dunes, with a highly acclaimed design by Greg Norman. Some of the best links land in the world!

I was very disappointed in Doonbeg. The staff were not at all friendly—dictatorial was more like it—and I think Greg Norman messed up a good piece of linksland. The Clubhouse looks like a prison and as our bus driver said, “a blight on the landscape.” This is one that will be dropped from future itineraries, and the group as a whole agreed. The only plus was that the woman golfers got quite a beak on the tee positions, making it a little more woman friendly. Rating – 3.

Monday, August 27 Today after breakfast you leave for the airport @ 6.35am and will depart Shannon @ 9.35am on Delta Flight 123 for the USA and and home. Arrive August 28, JFK 11.40 am.
