Golf Tips » September 2000 – Coming over the Top

Friday, September 1, 2000

This month’s tip is suggested by Bob Ferraro of Philadelphia who asks :

"I have a problem "coming over the top" with my swing. What is the quickest and easiest way to remedy this?"

Bob, the most common reason for "coming over the top" is taking the club too far on the inside as in picture #1

This causes the club to be "rerouted on the way up and the club then ends up "crossing the line" and the elbow "flies". These faults can be seen in picture #2

To correct your swing:

Work on taking the hands straight back along the toe line and then working the club up a little more vertical as in picture #3

Finally, make sure you are in the "tray position" at the top.  Actually take a tray and put some items on it.  At the top the items should not tip off.  This can only happen if the right forearm is perpendicular to the ground as in picture #4

This drill will put you in a position to start the club down on the inside and deliver a slightly  "inside out" clubhead path.

Practice this and you will loose that dreaded slice forever!
