Golf Tips » October 2004: A sure cure for slicers!
Most of the golfers I work with on a daily basis slice the ball. One of the two main causes is “coming over the top” which I have covered in detail in previous tips. The other is failure to release the hands, meaning the right hand crosses over the left (for right handed golfers) enabling the golfer to square the clubface in order to hit the ball straight.
Most of the golfers who slice look like this through impact. Notice that the right hand is still under the left and the clubface is in an “open” position.

Picture #2 shows the correct position as the hands release through impact.

Here is a drill I gave to a student recently who was having great difficulty releasing no matter how hard he tried. Stand with your back facing the target and the ball position off your toe line as in picture #3, below.

Now go ahead and hit the ball: you will automatically release your hands through impact and you literally cannot slice the ball.

Work on this drill for a while to get the correct feel of the hands turning through impact and then go back to your normal stance and try to reproduce this feeling—your slice will be gone forever!
