Golf Tips » October 1999: How Do Female Golfers Get More Distance? Part 3

This months tip request comes from Wendy Morris of Pawleys Island who asks,

“How do female golfers get more distance?”

Well, Wendy, this is a common question asked at the golf school, and there are three parts to this article.

Part 1 was the August 1999 tip, How To Stop Topping the Ball.

Part 2 was the September 1999 tip, The Start of the Downswing – The Power Move.

So go back and read these tips first if you have not already read them.

Part 3: The Follow Through: The Secret to Direction

In order to consistently hit the ball straight, the clubhead must travel “directly down the line” which means the clubhead must travel towards the target just before and just after impact. If you have followed Part 1 and Part 2 of this article, the clubhead path should be correct, however, I have worked with students in the past who still have trouble with this part of the swing, so the drill I recommend is the “Extension – Rotation” drill.

1. Swing the club back so that your left arm (for right handed golfers) is parallel to the ground.

2. Start the downward movement, making sure that the hands stay close to the body.

3. Extend the arms with the clubhead traveling slightly to the right of your target.

4. Finish the swing with both arms extended out in front of you, with the clubhead pointing slightly to the right of your target.

Doing this drill along with the other two parts to this article, should have you hitting the ball longer and straighter than you ever have before!
