Golf Tips » October 1998: Bunker Shots – The Buried Shot
Saturday, October 3, 1998As you can see in Picture #1 My ball is buried the sand – normally a panic attack for most golfers. This shot is easier than it looks.
First, hood the clubface. This will cause the clubhead to dig in on the downswing and get the ball out.

Second, keep your grip pressure soft. This will allow the club to turn in your hand after it enters the sand, allowing the clubface to square off, and the ball to come out towards the target.
Third, like all bunker shots – make sure you follow through. The club will tend to slow down as it makes contact with the sand, so keep the torso turning through the shot as in picture #2,

Picture #2
and the club will continue through the sand without any problem.
Here are a few rules:
- Close the clubface at address.
- Grip the club very lightly.
- Hit approximately 2” behind the ball.
- Make sure you follow through to the target.
