Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Follow along and see just how easy it is to regain the yards you have lost in the last few years.

The hip bone's connected to the... golf swing!  There's a direct correlation between hip speed and the distance you get from your swing in golf.  Increase your hip speed, and you'll get more distance. Unfortunately, it's common for distance to decrease as we age.  The good news is that you can GET THAT DISTANCE BACK by... you guessed it, increasing your hip speed.

This is a video I did a few months ago.  I have expanded both the variety of exercises and the number of times you need to do them.  In this month's video golf tip, I demonstrate some easy exercises that you can do at home, no matter your age, that will increase your hip flexibility and speed. One student did these exercises for just 3 weeks and got more than 20 yards of extra distance per shot on average. Does that sound like a challenge?

The Drill.

Part 1.  Take 2 alignment sticks or golf clubs and hold them out in front of your with both arms straight.  The reason for this is I want to keep my upper body as still as possible during the drill.  Start by slowly twisting your hips to the rear as you would in a golf swing. Stop when you feel tightness.  Then twist them around to the front as you would in the follow-through.  All the while keeping the shoulders facing forward.  As you loosen up, you can slowly increase the rotation speed and do them faster and faster.  Do this for about 2 minutes.

Part 2. Put your lower hand (right hand for right-handed golfers) behind you and your upper hand in front of you and start twisting back, allowing your front heel to come off the ground.  Again slowly increase your speed. Could you do it for about 2 minutes?

Part 3.  Now move your upper hand in front f you and the lower hand behind you, and now twist your hips to mimic a follow-through. Slowly increase the speed, allowing the rear heel to come off the ground. Could you do it for about 2 minutes?
