Monthly Golf Tips by the  Mel Sole Golf School.

In this month’s video golf tip, Mel discusses the specifics of effective golf practice. You can't expect to improve your golf game if you don't put some time in, and practice can be fun!

Perception vs. Reality.

What you think you are doing in your golf swing and what you actually are doing are two completely different things.  This is true for almost every golfer on the planet, including Rory McIlroy.  I discuss watching Rory in a recent telecast and watched him do a rehearsal swing, only to do a completely different swing when he hit the ball!  To correct what he was doing, Rory needed to exaggerate the rehearsal swing totally!  That way, when the body is hitting the ball with what the player thinks is the rehearsal swing, the swing will be exactly where he wants it!

Don't be afraid to exaggerate on the range!

Whatever you are working on in your swing, don't be afraid not only to exaggerate the motion but don't be afraid to hit bad shots!  Bad shots are just a stepping stone to the result!  The top golfers hardly ever look at shots that they hit on the range.  They know the moment they hit the ball, whether it is a good shot or not.  So the constant rehearsal of the swing and hitting shots is a work in progress.  There will come a time where the swing will fall into place, and the new movement will start feeling comfortable and natural.

Taking it to the Course.

Taking the new move to the course is totally different as the conscious mind does not yet trust the new move and will override the subconscious with fear and doubt.  The way to overcome that?  Constant repetition.  Any golfer working on changes to their swing needs to play some practice rounds where the is no keeping score.  When you hit a bad shot, drop another ball, and hit another shot.  This is the only way to build trust in the new swing on the golf course.

So the combination of practice tee and golf course will slowly build the new motion to a point where the golfer can play without thinking.  THAT is nirvana!
