Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Last week, I worked with a student who was having a hard time shifting his weight to his front side. Most of his shots were off the back foot.  After trying several things, I asked him to imagine that the golf ball basket was a bucket of water. Then, I asked him to throw this imaginary bucket of water down the fairway.  The weight shift was immediate and after picking up the golf club was able to shift his weight!

Falling back is common!

This position in picture #1 is all too common.  Golfers tend to fall back in an attempt to get the ball into the air.

Use a Bucket or Basket!

I asked him to imagine he had a bucket of water and would throw the water out in front of himself. (I used a basket in place of the bucket here.) This helped him feel the correct motion

I asked him to hold the bucket with the top facing towards the target, then to swing the bucket back..#3.

...and through#4 to the target without having the water splash back on him. He performed the move perfectly.

He would have looked like this if he performed this task when he was swinging the club earlier—#5.  As you can see, the water would not have gone forward!

Next, I asked him to take his club and perform the same move without the basket.

The improvement was instantaneous, and he now has a good weight shift.

So, if you are having trouble shifting your weight (and most high handicap golfers do), Try a bucket of water to improve your weight shift! You'll be pleasantly surprised.
