In response to one of my subscribers who asks, " Why do the Pro's keep the clubhead outside the hands on the backswing?"  The answer is not as simple as it seems.  Follow along as I talk about the backswing.  Taking it on the inside or not?

Why is the clubhead outside the hands of most modern players?

The modern "one-piece" takeaway has no manipulation of the arms and hands on the backswing.  Obviously, the fewer moving parts we can have in the golf swing, the more efficient the swing will be. When there is no manipulation, the clubhead automatically stays slightly outside the hands halfway back on the backswing. The club starts to hinge up from there, and the club gets behind the shoulders at the top of the backswing.

Should I take the clubhead on the inside?

For golfers who have been playing golf for a long time and take the club on the inside because they were taught when they were young, the answer is no. When the habit is so established that the movement is embedded deeply in the subconscious, the change would be almost impossible.  It would not be worth the hours and hours to make the change for minimal benefit in ball striking.

Juniors and beginners.

However, for juniors and beginners that do not have established habits, this is a great way to swing a golf club and is worth the work to get the club working in this manner.  The club will more easily move upwards and on plane.

I hope I have answered all your questions on Technical Thursday #67 Backswing
