This entire week, we honor Jordan Spieth's win in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale and see how you can learn from what transpired, especially in that final 9 holes.  On the 13th hole, Jordan hit his tee shot way right.  After declaring his lie unplayable (the player is the sole judge as to whether the ball is unplayable or not), he chose the option of going back as far as he liked keeping the original ball position between himself and the flag.  Jordan chose to go back as far as he liked. Ending up amongst the TV Vehicles, he took another drop for line-of-sight and ends up with a clear shot and a nice lie.  That decision was the right option, and he went on to win the tournament.

You have 3 options for an unplayable lie.

  1. Drop the ball two club-lengths, not nearer the hole.
  2. Go back as far as you like, keeping the point where the ball lies between you and the hole.
  3. Play the ball from the position of the last shot.

Weigh all these options carefully.  Understand that if you play another bad shot, you may be stuck in a loop as Arnold Palmer did at Pebble Beach when he made his famous 10!
