Today we present part two in this week's 4 part series on developing a sound fundamental golf swing. The subject matter today is the start of the backswing and understanding the proper sequence.

The backswing is started with the chest.  That way, everything moves at once and in sequence. To get a feel for this, take a club and place the butt end of the club on your sternum.  Grip the club down on the steel with both arms fairly straight.  Get into your golf posture and start the backswing.  If you start the backswing with your chest, you will notice everything starts together.

The hips, shoulders, and torso all move in sync.

If you start with the arms, the butt of the club will pull away from the chest.  Practice this in your living room until it starts to feel very natural. Once you have that feel, get into your normal address position and move the club away from the ball in one piece and allow the club to go all the way to the top of the backswing.  There are two things to note at the top of the backswing.  The rear arm should be in what I call the "tray' position.  This is, the rear forearm is perpendicular to the ground. (or the best that you can do) The wrist cock happens naturally without you having to consciously cock your wrist.  If your grip pressure is soft, this will happen without effort.
