Unbeknown to us, there are amazing stories of human endeavor and acts of courage each week on the PGA Tour.  Players go about their business of competing on Tour with the sole purpose of living their dream of winning on the PGA Tour.  But there are a few amazing stories that you did not know, presented by Swing by Swing.

The next time you complain about your aches and pains you might want to consider that there are a lot of people who are worse off than you - or there are some heroic characters in and around the PGA Tour, men who have fought huge odds.

Here are just a few of them.

JB HOLMES.

Holmes is a former Ryder Cup player, known for the prodigious distance he hits the ball, together with a fabulous putting stroke. It’s a rare combination, but it counted for nothing in 2011 when he started to suffer from vertigo. He had little or no energy and lost his appetite, for food and for golf.

His doctor sent him for scans, where it was discovered that he was suffering from a brain abnormality that required immediate surgery. He underwent an operation - brain surgery is a very risky procedure - but Holmes came through it.

Months later, an allergy to the plate inserted in his skull meant that he had to have more surgery. On top of that, he broke an ankle AND had to have serious shoulder surgery. It is a life-changing experience for the golfer, who had a red-hot temper. Now, all is calm and serene. All of which makes his victory at the Wells Fargo championship extra special.

PAUL AZINGER.

Azinger won the US PGA Championship in August 1993. He had the world at his feet. But the time was out, the diagnosis was cancer and was fighting for his life.

He had non-Hodgkin lymphoma in his right shoulder, but vowed to beat it. Azinger’s treatment included six months of chemotherapy, followed by five weeks of radiation. He wrote a book, Zinger, about his battle with the disease and became the recipient of GWAA Ben Hogan Award in 1995.  Given to the individual who has continued to be active in golf despite physical handicap or serious illness.

In 2000, he won his first tournament in seven seasons at the Sony Open and in 2008 he captained the US Ryder Cup team to victory at Valhalla - their first win over the European team since 1999.
